Friends of Wemyss Bay Station
On 19th August the Friends marked the 70th anniversary of the evacuation of troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in a very special way. A reproduction in plant materials of the paddle box crest of the first Waverley has been created for the station, and placed on the walkway leading to the pier. This paddle steamer was one of the many little ships which went to the rescue in May 1940. Sadly she eventually came under attack from German bombers, and was sunk. Her captain, John Cameron, was rescued and some 300 others. He went on to become captain of the second Waverley, which continues to sail the Clyde today. Jean Cameron, his widow, joined the Friends on Monday, to mark the occasion at Wemyss Bay, and was joined by Duncan MacNeil, MSP, Stuart MacMillan, MSP, John Yellowlees (ScotRail), SusanPaterson (CalMac) and Councillor Innes Nelson, amongst others.
