Skelmorlie Public

by bill wilson

Hello from Oz

I went to school in Skelmorlie and lived there from 1942 till 1951 when we moved to Australia.

God, what a long time ago that was, but I still think of Skelmorlie as my home town. There were Cathcarts at school with me and I have a pic of Miss Bruce's class of I think 1949 or 50

It would be great to know if anyone in Skelmorlie remembers me

Are you the Bill Wilson who stayed above the shop? Did you have a sister Nancy?  If so, I remember your family well.  My name was Gina Thomson I stayed opposite the shop beside the pub.

bill wilson says

Hello Gina,

Yes I am and yes I do have a sister Nancy and we lived above the shop.  I remember you very well. You had a big brother and you lived up the stairs and your kind mother once gave me a full set of toys with a castle.

I have so many memories of Skelmorlie. Nancy and I often talk about things we did and the people we knew. Such a long time ago but the memories are very clear. Great to hear from you and when I tell Nancy that Gina Thomson (Dooley)  responded she will be as pleased and thrilled as I am

My brother is Don Thomson both of us live in Largs now, my daughter and grandchildren live in the village. It is a long time ago, I remember being sad when your family moved away.

Gina,

I remember your brother Don, though he was older than me, I think your mother and mine were quite good friends and visited each other. Kind of you to say you remember being sad when we moved away. If my memory is still ok I think Mr Alexander the Headmaster lived in the block of apartments where you lived and I think the Librarian, I think his name was McGee lived there too. Where in the village do your daughter and granchildren live? Is your husband a village man?  I have two grown up daughters and four grandchildren. My wife is Australian

Gina Dooley says

Hi Billy

Yes, Mr Alexander stayed in the same block and Harry McGeehan was the librarian. My daughter lives at Hillview, my son lives in Fairlie, I have three grandchildren 17, 12 and 9. No my husband was not a village man he came from Paisley, we divorced and he has since died.

I live in Largs not far from Don. Does Nancy live near to you and your family.

bill wilson says

Hello Gina.

You callled me Billy because I think you remembered me as "Willie"  LOL.

So, your family remains close. that's nice.

Nancy (who isNancy McLeod) lives near the beach in Torquay which is about 100 kilometres from Melbourne. We live in a place called Kangaroo Ground, about 25 kilometres north of Melbourne. and, yes, there are many kangaroos around. lots of rabbits too. way to many, they eat everything in sight. We had horses when my daughters were younger, so we have about 10 acres. Girls have moved out and the horses have all passed away from old age. So, just the two of us. Probably need to move.

Cheers

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
