the Diggins Upper Skelmorlie

by jean MacKinnon

Sorry, this is a question rather than a memory. Can anyone tell me what the origin of the Diggins was? I remember it as a row of poor housing . From its name it suggests accommodation for workers in some sort of excavation enterprise, but I don't remember ever seeing any such activity.I have found a photo on the web but no information.

I was born in Wemyss Bay but was brought up the first seven years of my life in the Diggins. When the new Innes Park Road was finished we all moved into that housing. The Diggins was Innes Park Buildings. It was poorer housing with outside toilets but the people who lived there were from all walks of life. Lottie Klapatiuk nee Stewart

Reply for Jean McKinnon - Hi Jean, since you posted your question in the memories section I didn't know where else to post the reply but The Diggins (Innes Park Buildings) was originally constructed to house the quarry workers at Beithglass Quarry, situated adjacent to Skelmorlie Golf Clubhouse. I have put photos of the Quarry and the original "Diggins" building on the Facebook group, "I know Skelmorlie well"

Robert Cathcart says

Hi again - there is a picture of the Diggins on this site as well, its in the photo section called "Buildings".

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
