Dunkirk Commemoration
9th August, 2010
The Friends of Wemyss Bay Station have been able to mark the 70th anniversary of the evacuation of Dunkirk thanks to the suggestion and skill of Ian Welsh, of Inverclyde Council's Parks and Gardens. He has created in plant material the paddlebox crest of the first Waverley, which, in 1940, was part of the armada of little ships which rescued the troops stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk. Sadly that Waverley was sunk during the action, but her captain, John Cameron, was one of those rescued, and went on to become captain of the second Waverley, which still sails the Clyde today. John Cameron's widow, Jean, joined us on 9th August, to take part in our marking of the occasion. Also attending were Duncan MacNeil, MSP, Stuart MacMillan, MSP, Councillor Innes Nelson, John Yellowlees (ScotRail), and Susan Paterson (CalMac).
