Skelmorlie buildings welcome visitors for Doors Open Day
25 AugustThere’s a chance to look behind the doors of some of Skelmorlie and Ayrshire’s most iconic and interesting buildings as part of the annual Doors Open Day event, which is being held across Scotland during September.
Several properties will be open over the weekend of Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September, offering a rare chance to see around the buildings.
The ROC Monitoring Station near Skelmorlie will be open for pre-booked tours on Saturday 3rd - telephone 01475 672 134 before 31 August. Please note that this site will also open on Sunday 11th September for free booking-only tours. The post was built in 1965 as part of an extensive chain designed to confirm and report effects of nuclear attack on military and civilian targets in the west of Scotland. Complete with original equipment and instrumentation installed for Doors Open Day, experience what life was like underground. Guided tours lasting one-hour conducted by ex-ROC personnel who served here during the 1980s until 1991.
The Skelmorlie Aisle opens from 2pm-5pm on Saturday, and 12noon-5pm on Sunday. The Aisle is a 1636 Renaissance-style canopied tomb within mausoleum to Montgomerie Family. Splendid painted barrel-vaulted timber ceiling.
Properties across Ayrshire, and across Scotland will be taking part in the Doors Open Days events over several weekends in September.
