Skelmorlie Library and Community Centre: Council demand new report

Well, we have all been waiting with baited breath to hear what’s going to happen to Skelmorlie Library and Community Centre.

(In case you haven't heard the Council says it might shut them down.)

Anyway the latest is- North Ayrshire Council has decided they are going to throw the Grant Thornton report out the window. The Council agenda from the Executive meeting of April 12 said: "Members did not accept the recommendations as contained in the Grant Thornton report and that Members wished to reject the report."

That’s right, they are not going to go by the recommendations given by the consultant in his costly report.

Today’s Council agenda also said: “It was also the view of Members that the report was founded on inaccurate information in relation to the Council’s objectives for the long term future of halls, centres and libraries.”

So instead the Council is going to do new reviews for each and every library, hall and community centre in North Ayrshire.

What the Council will now do is set up a group to consider “the future of community halls and libraries”. The group will probably be made up of some of the councillors. The new reports will be finished by the end of August this year.

Last year, independent consultant Grant Thornton was tasked with looking at the libraries and halls.

Many people said the report was too expensive (it cost thousands to produce). Some people were also annoyed that it wasn’t ready in time for the Council’s budget meeting in February this year.

It was at the February budget meeting that the Council decided to defer closures of all libraries, hall and community centres for a year.

The future of our libraries is still really up in the air. But one thing the Council seem keen on is that the communities themselves manage the facilities. Today’s agenda also talks about “the importance of people working together to do things within their communities”.

NAFCA (North Ayrshire Federation of Community Associations) still seem keen on managing some of the facilities. But what about the facilities they don’t want?

Do you care about the facilities? People have spoken out in their favour in the past on s1skelmorlie.
